reform, llc and students at the Catholic University of America Graduate Concentration in Design Technologies were commissioned by Envision, PLLC and The Society for Neuroscience to design and fabricate the Cajal Wall. The Cajal Wall is a three dimensional feature wall surface adjacent to the main circulation stair at the Society for Neuroscience Headquarters in Washington, DC. The feature wall, situated in the public entry point, was to embody and convey the profession of the neuroscientist.

A specifically designed algorithm was used to translate a sketch of the neural network in the brain into a three dimensional construct.

Milled from formaldehyde-free medium density fiberboard panels, 16 uniquely contoured wall panels were fabricated using a 3-axis Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) router. The innovative method of fabrication and final panels transforms the two dimensional sketch into a three dimensional surface. When seen from afar, the sketch can be understood. When seen from a close distance, the sketch transforms into an abstract, textured surface that resembles the system of veins beneath the surface of the skin.
